We`ve come to terms that chareidi nieghborhoods are to be kept clean. What`s clearly not accepted as well as not really working (the proof is in the need for the tactics) is the old mindset that exceessive force delivers the best message. In the old times (ancient, not recent hundreds) where bais din had more power, beatings were administered only through tough decision weighing. The exact health conditions and clear instruction was given by the bais din to strike the perpetrator. Still this was only AFTER much urging, begging and attempts to positively influence and persuade the perp to repent. Note that this was at a time where not much social enlightenment was available to the scene. Why is it that at a time and place where so much advice, skill and monies are available at our disposal and yet we can`t seem to muster up the few pounds of patients to do what was done in ancient times first? It would seem almost pointless to side with the perp if the proper attention did`nt work. |
