| The state of affairs that the Palestinians have played a large role in creating is that there is no solution that involves Palestinians flooding in to the state of Israel. The purpose of creating a Palestinian state will be, if anything, to provide a political vehicle for the expression of Palestinian national self-determination, in parallel the Israel as the political vehicle for Jewish national self-determination. There is no creating a Palestinian state on the basis of undermining the reasons that Israel was created in the first place. Abbas, it seems, even as he plays lip service to peace, has not yet decided to accept the decisions of 1948. Until such time tas the Palestinian body-politic accepts those decisions, or at least determines to live with them, the Palestinians will continue to be unable to successfully pursue their nationalist aspirations. There is no substitute for the adoption of that position by Palestinians in the settlement of the ongoing conflict. |
