B`Gallil,

The conversions in Misroram State were the initative of their leaders because they, unlike the crypto-Kara`ite Western Zionists intellectuals of the Jewish Agency, respected the authority of Halacha. They understood the that there would be issues confronting them when they arrived in Israel.

Other than that, in Misoram, they were forced to accept Christianity by British sponsored missionaries. That "arrangement" remains intact to date, so that they risked a great deal in going through Halachic conversions.

As well, I have learned there are strict rules in the Republic of India for anyone to "leave their State" without permission from the authorities, so to leave for the big city and "be Jewish" is very difficult.

If that is the case, I figure that the Bene Menashe decided as long as they were stuck in the Misoram, they might as well convert k`Halacah as a protest to the Christian majority that controls the State.

Good for them, don`t you think?
