The Golan is far more important to Israel tacticly than a treaty on paper with Syria. The northern border apart from the occsional flare up with Hezbullah has been the most peacefull since the 70s.
Its important to Israel financialy, for security purposes, the largest demographic group are jews who live peacefully with their druze naighbors. Giving up the Golan would probably involve Syria getting share the Kineret which would be unacceptable & puts the terrorists closer to Israel.
A peace treaty is just promises which can be broken if you benefits more without a treaty we dont need it, this is about Israels interests not public opinion.
Hezbullah works for Iran and Assad cant be seen to alienate them because they are considered heros so if it comes to peace keeping obligations and upsetting Hezbullah its the terrorists who come first.
Assad unless he was certain he could win a war he wont attack Syrians would see it as a humiliation & he will be overthrown or assasinated. |
