Haaretz Staff and Channel 10 : In village with no power, Bedouin family fights to keep baby's respirator working
Talkback
Title:Inbreeding among the Beduin
Name:Neighbor
City: NegevState:
What they don`t mention in this clip is that this baby and thousands like her, is retarded and deformed as the result of a genetic problem due to the common practise of cousins marrying cousins among the Beduin.

Beduin communities throughout the Negev are full of severely disabled and retarded children and many are left in the hospital or die there.

In my experience, couples continue to have one disabled child after the other, fully aware of the reason.

This is one of the tragic, untold stories about life in Israel but it is not deemed politically correct to discuss it or to put the Beduin community on the spot in trying to solve the problem.

The real tragedy here is not because this illegal settlement is not connected to electricity but rather the fact that the parents knew the consequences of inbreeding and went ahead (probably more than once) and had this child in the first place. This baby was doomed by her own parents.
