In Mozart`s day, an artist needed the patronage of the wealthy and powerful to survive. Mozart himself failed at his attempts to succeed on his own. Beethoven refused to doff his hat at royalty, and lived a life of penury as the cost of his independence.
It is simply astounding how someone like Madonna can earn in excess of $100 million, when comparing her relative lack of talent to that of these men.
Perhaps if Beethoven had appeared at his concerts wearing pointy breast-plates, he would have died rich.
