And can you blame the Chinese? They have an ancient culture, vast land and labor resources- today, their main problem is natural resources. The thing is, China is jealous of Western culture because of the recognition we`ve gotten. Our culture is under 2000 years old at best, yet today we get all the attention. That`s why Chinese teens wear polos with popped collars and fake Diesel jeans. The Chinese, by and large, don`t give a damn about Western military might- they just wish their Beijing opera could sell as well as Britney Spears (or Avril Lavigne, who is inordinately popular here). That`s what the Olympics are all about- proving to the world what a cultural success Communist China has become, and getting the proud Chinese culture and history some deserved publicity.
Dealing with regular Beijing folk every day, I couldn`t imagine a war with China. I could imagine winning one, but the death and senseless destruction involved is unimaginable, and I think all our gov`ts realize. |
