| And if it weren`t, with all the editing tools available today, how could one tell? The odd thing is that this hasn`t happened before. Why not? Madonna, the Pope, numerous other celebrities have put notes in the Wall. Maariv`s story keeps changing. First they said Obama`s campaign gave permission, then they retracted. An unnamed student gives the note to Channel 2, apologizing for the "prank." Then Maariv says they purchased the note the day before. Maariv`s initial statement included a weird bit of sarcasm: that as a non-Jew, Obama of course had no right to privacy. Sarcasm has little place in such a situation. "Checkbook journalism" is also inappropriate. Maariv was involved in another well-known "prank" a few years ago, when the false story of the demise of Amnon Rubinstein, Meretz founder and Maariv columnist, was circulated, leading to Avram Burg eulogizing him in the Knesset.
