An independant palestinian state while the palestinian people are still committed to islamicist terrorist organizations like Hamas would be a disaster of major proportions for the entire region. Abbas has been rejected by the palestinian people, but he still remains the "darling" of US career diplomates and politicians who insist on seeing him as a serious palestinian leader. This is foolishness, and while it was a harmless charade as long as Cheney remained a strong influence on US policy, the pro-Abbas (and independant palestinian state at any cost) bias in the US state department could be truly dangerous once Obama takes office. On the other hand, the US state department clientism that is the basis of such foolishness would be greatly negated if Abbas is gone and the terrorist Hamas is the only palestinian "client" for the US state dept fools to push for, since even Obama would not dare to back the Hamas terrorist organization as a ruler of a independant palestinian state
