| When Abbas succeeded Arafat, he was widely ignored for years by Israel, America, and everybody else. Later, after the Palestinians elected the Hamas government, America and Israel found some use for Abbas as their cats paw against Hamas and they proceeded to fuel a Palestinian civil war. By arresting the Hamas government, Israel gave some fake legitimacy to their junior ally and continued to fuel the Palestinian infighting. In the end, Abbas proved a disappointment to Israel and they cast him aside as a used handkerchief. Now, with no base of power except his own faction, and that is shakey, Abbas owes it to the Palestinian people to call for immediate elections. The Palestinians need a single strong voice, representing all of the people to act on their behalf. Abbas has nowhere else to go, so let him put it to the people. |
