It is impossible to tell the merits of the case from this short article, but national politicians should NOT be sticking their noses into international family custody battles just to score political points. Other nations cooperate with the US to resolve these disputes only to the extent that we abide by a mutually agreed set of rules and procedures. When a national (in this case, global) politician dips his hand into the cookie jar, other countries get pissed and ALL pending custody disputes risk being adversely affected.
Besides, the political value of such a move is questionable. Politicians were climbing over each other to help out the "Miami relatives", in the process pleased a few Cuban-American right-wingers and nauseating the rest of us. |
