Millicent,

You say the "right` things, but for the wrong reasons. The expemptions were made after B-G and the Hazon Ish, the leading Haredi spokesman of those days to replenish the number of Torah Scholars that were lost in the the Holocaust. Sixty years later, Please God, the situation is blessed with a large number of Torah Scholars.

Many so called-Secularist young men and women who have found ways of either "staying close to home", or getting "profile 21", exempting them from service for a variety of reasons. You are correct, though, many commanders would like more BenYishim aka Yeshiva students because they are the best soldiers around these days.

The real issue for the Yeshivot is to be more selective and send the boys to Haredi units. The Haredi rabbis are divided on that issue which complicates matters, so I suggest you stop chepping, and hope for the best.
