He is making sure that no American politician can respond to any Israeli attack on Iran by saying "Whoah! I Never Saw That Coming!!!".
And he is saying it in such a way that Bush and his neocon buddies can`t attack him as interferring with current US foreign policy.
It is a very clever call by Obama, because it puts pressue on the USA to put pressure on Israel Not To Do This, and all the while he can say "Well, don`t look at me! I was just voicing a personal opinion".
A very smart politician indeed.
