... may feel relieved of party-politics and their considerations enough to conclude a Syrian peace treaty before he leaves office - or at least move so far along on one that it would be difficult for his successor to step back from one.
A silver lining, perhaps - so long as Syrian interests can be detached sufficiently from Iranian ones, via the negociations.
