At Lausanne it was decided that the fate of Hatay would be decided with a plebiscite in 1938. Before that Turks forced a lot of its citizens into the Hatay province most of them illegally. Hatay had never belonged to Syria before.
Golan on the other hand was and is accepted as part of Syria by the world and the UN. It was acquired in a defensive war and it is very crucial for Israel`s defense but the Hatay model of making a plebiscite will not receive a welcoming from the world and as a Jew and supporter of Jewish Israel I must say that rightfully so.
Dennis Ross in his book described the negotiations with Assad and some security provisions that were acceptable to Israeli military. It must be up to these experts to decide the nature of the agreement. |
