During that time the military has had to step in on several occassions and take the reins of the government in order to keep it secular. These occassions have been peaceful and were not the same thing as a coup
The 1960 military coup was a bloody one. The PM Menderes and other ministers were hung as a result. I know it I was there. Later coups ended with the executions of Deniz Gezmis and Mahir Cayan not to mention many who disappeared and never heard of. Again I know it because I lived through them. |
