i agree with your views wholeheartedly; which would be the optimum scenerio... however, in the case of the gaza militants, who are NOT all willing to desist from the use of rockets and mortars against the israeli towns along its fringes...and in consideration of israel`s tendency to respond with heavy handed retaliation regardless of any casualties; the deployment of the phalanx defense system would allow for the security of israeli citizens WITHOUT the need for retaliation which not only undermines the efforts towards peace, but also empowers the militants who continue their rocket/mortar attacks into israel. with the phalanx allowing israel to withhold it`s heavy hand while protecting its citizens; then the tide of support for the militants in gaza will tend to fade as THEY become the culprits in the eyes of its citizens... which is far more likely to lead to peace than israeli bombs landing in their midst... bottom line is that the phalanx would allow israel to "ignore" those militant attacks, and to better cultivate a rapport with the "people" of gaza. |
