Mrs. Gandhi was never anti-Israel or anti-Semetic,as claimed by some. but she was pro-Arab mainly for economic reasons. As a new, developing country, international trade was very essential for its growth and the Arab countries were some of its biggest trading partners. The attitude of the Arab states towards Israel was far more rigid during her years as PM and she would have gone down in history as an irresponsible leader had she shown any favourable interest in Israel. But I know from first-hand experience,having had worked closely with her in the 60s, that she
had the greatest regards and respect for Jews. |
