| hi baz mann, - it may be that iran isn`t really a threat to the world at large, but it IS a threat to the region & is percieved as such. the arab sunni states are more than just worried at the prospect of iran getting its bomb, which means once iran has achieved nuclear arms capability you can count on a chain reaction & serious destabilization of the whole ME. the arab world can live w/the existence of the israeli nuclear arsenal but not w/an iranian one, which would "seal" iranian hegemony in the region & make others crave nuclear weapons for themselves in response to it. furthermore, to stop nuclear proliferation at this point AT ANY PRICE, ie not one single additional country to get the bomb, is of paramount importance to the whole world, without any doubt. it`s a matter of principle. if you don`t stop it here it will be copied by others & you`ll never be able to stop it. the non-proliferation issue cannot be made contingent on the general reduction of nuclear arms issue. |
