Sarkozy pulled up Syria and gave it a status she does not deserve. WHY? Not because this would politically be a wise move, but because Syria is an ex-French-Mandate of Palestine: "Noblesse oblige". France´s foreign policy goes from "cherishing" good, warm relations with all her ex:es. That Syria (whose objective has been "Greater Syria", which includes Lebanon) will open a Syrian Embassy in Beirut, means that France has succeeded to discipline the disaccord betw. her two ex-"subjects". What motivates France to strengthen Syria and Lebanon in the region? It lets France keep her own foot betw. the door, to keep it open, for her continuous influence in the ME. This is the core of the problem with France as well as with America: they couldn´t care less about what is good for the ME, all they care about is their own authority in the ME. The spirit of colonialism is alive and kicking still in 2008! In order to get rid of this colonialism once and for all, the ME should not enable it. |
