| The purpose of drafting and passing resolution 1701 was to end the war, and it did this. Resolution 1701 returned the pre-war status quo. Both sides have repeatedly broken resolution 1701 and this was predictable. If UN resolutions were effective tools to change the reality on the ground, then the UN could sit in NYC and pass resolutions to cure all the worlds problems. In reality, the UN is doing good if they manage to end a conflict using any fakery and quackery available to them. All concerned know this. Only the desperate or the naive will cling to a UN resolution and demand that the UN "uphold" every detail contained therein. The UN is in the business of maintaining the status quo through observation, and they don`t do that particularly well. As a frequent critic of the UN, Israel knows this. |
