shalom,
i liked the palestinian girl`s idea, to auction the letters and/or drawings and give the proceeds or most of them to literary research foundation and the like (eg jewish literary heritage).Having said that,
1. it is fair that the literary legacy does NOT leave Israel
2. the state archivist has no right over the legacy, as it belongs to the daughters of the defunct secretary
3. the daughters have legitimate right to expect to be rewarded and generously so for handing over kafka`s literary legacy, but they should also seriously consider the moral dimension of the story, that this is an important legacy for the collective jewish memory, too important to make a living from; besides, their mother had already earned enough money by ordinary people`s standards to leave to her children (almost two million dollars)
i hope the daughters earn a good name of posterity for helping am israel preserve owership of the manuscripts of a great 20th c. jewish writer |
