What sort of israeli PM would give up the strategically important golan heights in return for promises from this two bit dictator who rules from the top of a powerkeg of racial and religious hatred??? Obvious answer--only an israeli PM who was under unbearable pressure from a US president who considers israel to be the "fundamental problem" for world peace. Neither Bush nor McCain fits that description. It remains to be seen if Obama does, but given the published US polls, it is certainly good tactics for Assad to wait and hope that Obama will be the next president of the US.
