| What was an original Jew? King David was a Jew, and Solomon king, and Moses was the first. Nobody knows how were the original Jews. But if we believe the Torah, they married non-Jewish wives, were serious sinners, and quite licentious regarding cultural assimilation. Original Jews were for sure not close to ultra-Orthodox or orthodox Jews. These are an invention of 18th century. Azkenazi Jews resemble ethnically and culturally their local neighbours, and Sephardic, Indian, Ethiopians, Yemenite, etc. the same. It seems that it was very Jewish to partially assimilate to the background culture but preserving certain specific traits of the `deep` Jewishness. |
