| So, all indications lead to believe that the US and Israel veto the strengthening of the Lebanese Army with lethal weapons but is supportive of more mundane tasks such as riot control, transport equipment, etc. which have been beneficial lately. Long term, the argument in Lebanon is that the only way to support Lebanon`s sovereignty is a capable force. Having a strong Lebanese Army is thus in the interest of peace in the Levant and should be an incentive for Israel to lift or soften the veto on giving teeth to the Army. That will allow Lebanon to negotiate regional issues that arise including the issue of borders with Syria, water with Israel and trans-country paramilitary groups. Peace of the brave vs arab weakness in in everybody`s interest. |
