"Israel is attractive as a concept, but entirely alien as an actual, physical place. "
Mr. Gross` ideology prevents him from seeing that Mr. Levey`s experiences caused him to see Israel for what it is, rather than what it is supposed to be or imagined to be. Mr. Levey is correct, it is a self-absorbed unwelcoming place and certainly not a place in which Western Jews are welcome. Why? Because the Israelis, especially among the elites which includes the diplomats, themselves don`t want to be Israelis. They dream about being Americans and Canadians. Thus, they view Western Jews interested in being a part of Israel with contempt. |
