| John McCain was a prisoner of war in Hanoi for six years, during which he suffered tremendously from injuries and maltreatment. During that time, when the North Vietnamese government found out this his father was the Commander in Chief of US Navy forces in the Pacific, they offered to release the younger McCain for the propaganda advantage. John McCain refused to be released ahead of those any american prisoner captured before him, despite his injuries and bad physical condition. There was no public whining from his family, none of the sort of public politicing that only helps the enemy and increases the enemies advantage in negotiations. What a contrast with the Shalits: father, mother and son. What a contrast. Of course, Shalit was nothing but a corporal with no real military background or aptitude, while John McCain was an officer with a long family tradition of dedicated service to their country. Still and all, what a contrast! |
