| True, blacks in the US are imprisoned at a much higher rate than their percentage of overall population. But that has something to do with the fact that they commit a much higher percentage of crimes than their overall population representation. Most of the crime is black against black, by the way. We can discuss why this is so. But I don`t see much instituionalized racism in the US criminal justice system. Does anyone suggest that because left-handed Americans with Italian heritage comprise 2% of the population, there should be a 2% cap on the prison population of such people? I think not. A victim complains, the police investigate, if the complaint holds water, it is referred to the prosecution, which does its job. I am tired of hearing knee-jerk claims of racism if certain uncomfortable patterns might emerge in the statistics. |
