Labor did what it HAD to do. Barak has promised to push for Olmert`s replacement after Winograd. He failed to carry it out. Now, Labor simply must go through with the plan, or else this party will be seen as seat-oriented, and with no content otherwise.

What are Olmert`s option?
1. Fire Labor ministers who vote for new elections (planned for November), lose his coalition, and get new elections even sooner (perhaps in late September).

2. Olmert chicken out, does not fire Labor ministers, gets the bill to dissolve the Knesset delayed in committee until Talansky`s cross examination. If Talansky is discredited, the dissolution bill will die; if not, Olmert retires or gets new elections in November.

3. Take a leave of absence from the government, and undergo a cancer operation. If, as he claims, Talansky will be discredited in his cross examination (July 17), Olmert will come back, no new elections, and just continue his policies.

The most decent thing to do is to follow option #3. I bet Olmert knows that Talansky will not be discredited, and he just wants to maintain the standard that he can be PM as long as he is not indicted, regardless of his ethical standards. Therefore, option #3 is out. The next likely option is #2, and I guess this will be followed. Olmert tries to get Labor to blink first, but it does not work this time. He will blink instead.
