| The only environmentally safe way to run marine fish farms is 1) in river estuaries that flush wastes out to sea, 2) in coastal areas recharged by strong tidal flows, or 3) in vast open ocean pens for pelagic fish like tuna, many miles from shore (we do this in San Diego). It was the height of stupidity to allow a clique of well-connected, corrupt business hacks masquerading as "biotechnology entrepreneurs" to set up polluting fish farms in a sensitive reef area, close to tourism sites. They simply stuffed their pockets at public expense. They should be made to pay the cost of restoring the reef areas to pristine status quo ante condition. The idea that the fish pens enhanced the coral reefs is idiotic - coral doesn`t grow that fast, the competing marine life feeding on the high nitrogen flux displaces and kills the coral on which it grows. When the coral dies, the other life goes with it. Northern Israel fish farms are properly managed, unlike the Eilat mess. Good riddance. |
