| There is a debate whether the Israeli government wants peace. (its people obviously do). With peace, the citizens might turn their attention to corruption, spending priorities, a new political party, reduced US aid. But assuming peace is desired, you must make peace with the worst of your enemies. That is the very definition of peace. That means giving up enough to calm the worst of the extremists..not everything they want but enough..which means working with Hamas and making them control the extreme elements. And not as a precondition to an agreement. Or keep fighting and dying...The Irish fough the English for hundreds of years until England could no longer afford the expense, and the world changed. Someday the US may stop its $3 billion a year in aid because it cannot afford it. The Palestinians can wait. They have no place to go. |
