Syria is run by a minority dictatorship. Assad`s father surrounded the city of Hama and bombed it for a week, killing thousands of civilians, when the majority population tried to dethrone him. Eventually, the Assad`s and the Alawite minority will lose control and the Sunni of one type or another will take over. They will certainly not respect any agreements made by the Alawite dictators. Under the current geo-political-social reality there can be no peace with Syria. The previous decades of cease-fire has been maintained only by Israel`s dominant military position.
