Few Israelis wish to or can afford to live in Jerusalem. West Jerusalem is becoming a ghost town as more and more of its residential property is being bought by foreign Jews who use these apartments or houses a few times each year, usually during Jewish holidays, with foreign capital which drives up real estate prices and prevents even those Israelis interested in living in Jerusalem from buying or renting housing. Few Israeli politicians live in Jerusalem or even in the greater Jerusalem area, even though it it the declared capital and even though they are required to travel there to work in their ministries or attend Knesset sessions. In other words, many Israelis prefer to "feel" that Jerusalem is their enternal capital even when they have no physical or even religious relationship to the place. |
