| Where does the Jewish component fit in with being an Israeli? More secular Israelis today have visited ashrams in India than have studied in yeshivas, so isn`t it time to change the whole perspective? The old model of the land of Israel being a haven for persecuted Jews is no longer viable. Israel the state is now a country like any other with no ties to religion. Just like the nominally christian countries do not require adherence to religious vestiges, neither should the state. Forget bar mitzvas, forget funerals (cremate them all) etc. Judaism is anyway not taught in state schools. Teach them buddhism, taoism hinduism (but not Islaam) and let them forget they ever had ties to Judaism. It might stop the greenbacks flowing into the country to keep it solvent, but we`ll have to bite the bullet sometime. We`ll sell more military technology to the Yanks and the chinese. We don`t need reform Jews from the US to keep afloat. We can go it alone after 60 years. |
