| Sir, the case of Ivan (John) Demjanjuk versus the State of Israel was in the news from February 1986 to 1993. I would say that after the A. Eichmann trial it was the second most important court case in Israel which was demonstrated when ex-Premier J. Shamir attended a court session for one hour only to listen and to learn as he said in March 1987. In April 1988 judge Dov Levine found John guilty, however, in 1993 it was all over and the Israeli court could not prove that John was "Ivan the Terrible" from Treblinka. He is free now; since 1998 he is again a citizen of the USA. So, why should he be deported to the Ukraine? This country is independent since Mr. Jelzin`s days and was before a province within the Union of Soviet Republics. The capital of this Union was Moscow. May be the US should also ask the Russian Federation and it`s new President Mr. Dmitrij Medwedjew or the new Prime Minister Wladimir Putin. However, I agree that would not be a good diplomatic move. |
