Jews, for the most part in the US are located in urban large cities or the surrounding environs. I teach at select liberal arts college in rural western Michigan. Let me tell you something: I am (perhaps I should say "was") about as "secular" a Jew as one can be (married to non-Jews twice etc.)---I felt totally assimilated. Well, for all the Jews in Greenwich Village, NYC and other such places such as the NJ Shore (where I grew up): once you leave those areas for "real" America, lets just say rural America in the Midwest-- "YOU ARE A JEW" and you find out the hard way. Trust me. People don`t like Jews. Maybe it is pathology, politics, upbringing, (the cut in this part of MI is Christian/non-Christian which ironically [irony is lost on these people by the way] put Muslims and Jews in the same boat, a tragic irony actually--who cares: nature or nurture? Jew hatred is alive well, thank you. I learned that lesson later in life than I should have, but I learned nonetheless.
