Unfortunately, every visit by a dignitary during Israel`s 60th Independence Day celebration is seen as a political statement. The reason for that is that we have marked our 60th anniversary with a stalling of the peace process, continued settlement expansion, and no creative way of stopping the rockets in the south, nor any efforts to promote the peace process with Syria. And in this world of symbolic actions, a visit to Israel now implies complacency with that rather than a visit of celebratory identification with what Israel should stand for.
DOn`t blame the guest. Blame Olmert the host and his government who has for our part, stalled the peace process.
