| The commissioner of police says that the investigation must take precedence over the public`s right to know. It`s unreal. I used to think that a gag order was there to protect the rights of the defendant/accused/suspect, that`s the way it is supposed to be in a democracy. But apparently I have it all wrong. Here in Israel, the law is designed to give every advantage to the police -- gag orders, the right to hold people for long periods without charging them in order to break them down. And even then, the cops have great difficulty making a case. It`s straight out of Stalinism, with an element of the Keystone Cops thrown in for bad measure. |
