Looks like Magnes - so villified once upon a time, got it right - at least in principle. The partition now seems like it was the beginning of another of history`s end-game. The war that all saw coming ended in a victory for one side and a shoah for another. And since then there were more wars and more injustice.
Magnes realized - as did few others at the time - that a state for the jews at the expense of ethnic cleansing of the natives - cannot become a stable enterprise - ever. The approach he proposed now looks like a realistic play for time - a joint stewardship of the land and an effort to work together to administer it.
I wonder why this unique viewpoint gets so little play in modern israel. Surely, more credit should go to those who had foresight - even if it was in spirit only and never got a chance to be implemented.
can anyone imagine what could have been if none of those wars were fought and the path of negotiations was chosen instead? |
