This time American officials got a taste of how unpleasant many of the 500 or so Jewish colonists are who terrorize the old centre of Hebron and try to make life unbearable there for Palestinians. Maybe because many of these extremists are American they felt they could manhandle the American envoy`s bodyguards.
What I do not understand is the passivity of the Israeli authorities in the face of this repeated attacking/upsetting/insulting of official foreign visitors, who are considered friends of Israel (Germany, the USA). Don`t they worry that the cumulative effect of these incidents will have a very negative impact? Are they so complacent that they think they will never spend all of the credit that they have built up in the West in the past 60 years or so?
Or are they scared of a bunch of Jewish terrrorists, who are wreaking havoc with the army standing back either doing nothing or actively protecting them and condoning their offensive behaviour? |
