| Stringency is part of the Jewish zeitgeist. Our ethos has turned stern as a reflection of the failure of assimilation. Trying to be more like the Western European culture didn`t save us -- or even make us more acceptable. After Nazism and communism and secular Zionism, we have turned to a more isolationist, inward looking take on Halacha. |
