"Why, you may ask, do we not go ahead and do it now, force these people to move, return to 1967 lines? I have two words for our worst enemy: defensible borders. That, at root, is what Israelis want. Not the east Jerusalem Palestinian villages annexed to the city, not the settlements, not the suffering of the Palestinian people." - Bradley
Bradley, stop fooling yourself when everybody knows the real reason for lack of progress. If you do it in public, you lose your credibility.
The last time Israel worried about defensive borders was in Taba. Read Shlomo Ben-Ami`s book and you will see the term "the narrow hips of the state", which had to be protected. And you will also see negotiations over the Jordan Valley from a Defense point of view.
All this may have to do with Ariel, but not with Givat Zeev, Maale Adumim, Gush Etzion, Hebron, and the hills` gangs. Ariel Sharon left Gaza in order to turn the West Bank into Bantustans. And Olmert is stuck where he is because of the weakness of his coalition due to his weakness as leader.
The reasons change, the policy remains, and the underlying cause is over-appetite for others` land. |
