Oh dear me. It means 5 years in which on every programme discussing Israeli-Arab/Palestinian issues we will get a ranting woman giving an execrable display of bad manners, fanaticism and intolerance. Italy is, or was, a tolerant society, and playing this card is parlous. In her television encounter with the philosopher Gianni Vattimo recently, she spoke for 30 minutes: he barely managed two minutes of interjections (as representative of the `Palestinian` perspective).
Nirenstein was elected with a rightwing party which is now canvassing an antisemitic group, that of Francesco Storace, whose attitudes are rightfully deplored by the Roman Jewish community, in order to win the run-off election against the Democratic Party. Italy`s Jewish community is one of the most ancient, with a noble tradition and historical dignity. What a pity she will now represent an extremist voice, confusing her own Fallaci-hysteria-driven rants with the soberly intelligent perceptions of Italian Jews. |
