The general consensus is that in the "public domain" and public institutions will respect certain well established ancient Jewish customs to allow the very large (some say as much as 80% but even if "only" 50%) public of religious, haredi and masorati Jews to feel comfortable identifying with this new/ancient enterprise called Israel. Noone stops anyone from eating bread at home. If one wants war on every issue we can be in a perpetual cultural civil war. The real issues are the laws that coerce non-religious Jews to comport themselves with Halacha they do not believe in, primarily the entire Rabbinical Court disaster which both perpetrates horrible suffering on woman and families and sucks enormous budgets from the country. That is a travesty. The Hametz law is just a little self restraint out of respect.
