According to the Authorized Translation of the law:
“…the owner of a business shall not publicly display any leavened product for sale or consumption.
For this purpose, "leavened product" means - (1) bread; (2) rolls; (3) pitta; (4) any other leavened flour products.”
As Prof. Amnon Rubinstein has recently stated:
"The emphasis throughout the [1985 Knesset] debate was on that aspect: not on the actual sale or consumption of hametz but on its public display, which would offend feelings of observant and traditional Jews."
