| Some miracles are hidden in clear sight: A scant 30 years ago, at Pesach 1977, not one Beta Yisrael was recognized as a part of the living people of Israel. Today tens of thousands have not only reconnected to the Jewish people, almost all of this ancient community have made Aliyah and found a new home in the modern State of Israel after an exile and isolation of almost 2,500 years. Not only is this miraculous in its own right, but in rescuing the remnant of Israel from exile in Gondar and throughout Ethiopia, Israel created a historic precedent by specifically and actively seeking and rescuing black African refugees from hunger, poverty and neglect, something no country has ever done. The people of Israel, let alone the world, have yet to adequately acknowledg the full scope and meaning of this singular act of humanity, kindness and inclusiveness. While Passover celebrates the miracle of the ancient Exodus, we should also relish the modern micraculous Exodus from Russia, Yemen etc. |
