| Within the last few weeks an article in haaretz expressed concern that the billions that pour annually into the coffers of the state and NGOs may diminish due to decreasing affinity of the younger generation with zionist ideals. The founders of the state knew all about charity: for the most part they came from traditional jewish homes and communities where charity was the bedrock of communal cohesion. They knew how to usurp its role as well - and they did. Now that they state is to all intents and purposes bankrupt, the govt calculated that by cutting state benefits, they will squeeze even more out of the Jews in the diaspora - primarily from the haredi community where even quite poor families contribute huge sums to assist the poor. |
