| The games are supposed to represent democracy. China is as far away from democracy as it`s possible to be. Are the poor, the imprisoned, the sweatshop workers and the persecuted supposed to take a break during a sports event? Here in Vancouver, where we have democracy, we also have a growing number of homeless people. And you can be sure that during the Winter Games there`ll be a crackdown on panhandling. It`s impossible to ignore politics and poverty, however fascinating you might find the long jump, the hundred yard dash or a bob sled race. |
