Perhaps, as a practicing Anglican (COE), I`m not well-qualified to offer an informed opinion of His Holiness. But his two encyclicals are profound, and one of them - "Spe Salvi" - "Saved by Hope" - draws an interesting distinction between the failed hope engendered by revolutionaries and politicians on the one hand, and the sustaining hope in G-d on the other.
Anyone familiar with the words of "HaTikvah" (especially "od lo avdah tikvataynu") knows of this sustaining hope, for it lies both at the very heart of the anthem, of the Jewish people`s struggle for their homeland, and of Benedict`s encyclical.
