| Just after WWII, the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Israel Zolli, along with his wife and daughter publically declared their conversion to Catholicism. He took the name Eugenio Maria after the Pope Pius XII and became the librarian of the Pontifical Biblical Institute. His autobiography is "Before the Dawn". Thous he was not baptised by the pope, nor did he have any condemnation of Judaism as practiced, he was of course denounced by the italian Jewish community, had threats against his life, was said to have deserted the community in Rome and became the object of scorn and contempt. No one likes to have ones of its public figures leave them for another, especially another that is looked upon, theologically and historically as an adversary, even persecuter. |
